How to Apply for SID Online (2023): DG Shipping SID Card Online

Seafarer’s Identity Document (SID) is one of the important documents before joining a ship as a cadet.  The new bio-metric SID has provisions for the barcoding of the biometrics-based identity of seafarers and a centralized database maintained in the issuing country, which can be accessed globally through an interoperable & standard biometric template.

Many students don’t apply for SID before and wait for the company to ask for SID and then they face issues regarding appointments.

A Seafarer’s Identity Document (SID) is a document that verifies the identity and qualifications of a seafarer. It is an official document that is recognized by international maritime organizations and many countries around the world.

The SID contains information about the seafarer’s personal details, such as their name, date of birth, and nationality, as well as their qualifications, such as their certifications and training courses completed. The document also includes a photograph and a unique identification number to ensure the seafarer’s identity can be verified.

The purpose of the SID is to ensure that seafarers are qualified and trained to work in their respective roles on board ships and to provide a standard form of identification for seafarers that are recognized internationally. It is required for seafarers to obtain a SID in order to work on most ships, including commercial vessels and passenger ships.

The requirements for obtaining a SID vary depending on the country of issue but generally involve completing certain training courses and meeting specific qualifications and experience requirements. The SID is typically valid for a set period of time, after which it must be renewed.

So, you should apply for SID even before the company asks for it.

Is SID Mandatory for Seafarers?

Yes, Seafarers are required to hold the SID as part of their employment and the seafarer’s unions have made it clear that they prefer to have their passport as a separate document that makes no mention of their employment as a seafarer.
the Seafarer’s Identity Document (SID) is important for several reasons.
Firstly, it is a requirement for seafarers to obtain a SID in order to work on most ships, including commercial vessels and passenger ships. Without a SID, a seafarer may not be able to work in their chosen profession.
Secondly, the SID serves as a form of identification for seafarers that is recognized internationally. This can be important for travel and for ensuring that the seafarer’s qualifications and experience are verified.
Thirdly, the SID helps to ensure that seafarers are qualified and trained to work in their respective roles on board ships. This helps to ensure the safety of the crew, passengers, and cargo on board the ship, as well as the safety of the environment.
Overall, the Seafarer’s Identity Document plays an important role in ensuring that seafarers are qualified and trained to work on ships, and in providing a standard form of identification that is recognized internationally.
