BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND While underway at night you are coming up on a vessel from astern. What lights would you expect to see?

Official USCG Answer & Rule Citation

Correct Answer: Option A — One white light

Rule 13 defines an overtaking situation. Rule 21(c) states that a stern light is a white light placed as nearly as practicable at the stern, showing an unbroken light over an arc of 135 degrees. When approaching from astern, only the stern light of the overtaken vessel is visible.
