Rules of the Road USCG Question #1401 (Set 18)

BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND You are the stand-on vessel in an overtaking situation. The other vessel is showing a flashing red light. What action should you take?

Official USCG Answer & Rule Citation

Correct Answer: Option D — Stand on

Rule 17(a)(i) requires the stand-on vessel to maintain her course and speed. An overtaking situation, defined in Rule 13, does not change the stand-on vessel's obligation to maintain course and speed, regardless of the other vessel's lights, until the risk of collision is resolved by the overtaking vessel.
