Rules of the Road USCG Question #1608 (Set 20)

BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND You see a red sidelight bearing NW (315°). Which direction may the vessel be heading?

Official USCG Answer & Rule Citation

Correct Answer: Option A — south (180°)

A red sidelight covers the port side from dead ahead to 22.5 degrees abaft the beam. If the light bears 315 degrees (NW), the vessel is to your port. For you to see her red light, she must be heading in a direction that exposes her port side, such as south.
