Deck General USCG Question #3908 (Set 125)

Most of your vessel's superstructure is forward. How will the vessel lie when drifting with no way on?

Official USCG Answer & Rule Citation

Correct Answer: Option C — With the wind from abaft the beam

Superstructure acts as a sail. With the center of lateral resistance forward, the wind exerts more force on the bow than the stern. Consequently, the vessel will pivot until the wind is blowing from abaft the beam, allowing the bow to fall off away from the wind.
