Deck General USCG Question #930 (Set 29)

You start a centrifugal cargo pump to discharge cargo. The pump works fine for awhile and then loses suction. What could have caused this?

Official USCG Answer & Rule Citation

Correct Answer: Option A — incomplete priming

Centrifugal pumps require continuous prime to maintain discharge pressure. Incomplete initial priming leaves air pockets inside the casing, which expand under low pressure, break suction, and cause the pump to lose its prime during operation.
