Rules of the Road USCG Question #1967 (Set 32)

BOTH INTERNATIONAL & INLAND You are in charge of a power-driven vessel navigating at night. You sight the red sidelight of another vessel on your port bow. The other vessel's after masthead light is to the right of her forward masthead light. Which action should you take?

Official USCG Answer & Rule Citation

Correct Answer: Option A — hold course and speed

Rule 15(a) dictates that when two power-driven vessels are crossing, the vessel which has the other on her own starboard side shall keep out of the way. Since you see the red light (port side) of the other vessel, you are the stand-on vessel and must maintain course and speed.
