Marine Electrical Systems USCG Question #702 (Set 24)

Why should battery rooms we well ventilated during the charging of storage batteries?

Official USCG Answer & Rule Citation

Correct Answer: Option C — highly explosive gases will otherwise accumulate

During charging, electrolysis splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. Per 46 CFR Subchapter J and IEEE 45, battery spaces require forced ventilation to prevent the accumulation of these highly explosive gases and eliminate ignition hazards aboard vessels.
