Scavenging in a two-cycle diesel engine describes the process of displacing residual combustion gases from the cylinder using compressed air supplied by a blower, clearing the chamber to prepare for the subsequent fresh air charge.

Aftercooling charge air increases its density, allowing more oxygen mass into the cylinders for combustion. This directly increases indicated mean effective pressure, resulting in higher torque output and greater brake horsepower.

Scavenging forces high-volume airflow through the cylinder during the overlap period, sweeping away hot combustion products and directly transferring thermal energy away from the exhaust valves to prevent overheating.

A turbine-driven centrifugal blower utilizes waste exhaust gas energy to increase intake air pressure and density without imposing mechanical parasitic drag on the engine crankshaft, unlike gear or belt-driven blowers.

Turbocharging forces high-density air into the engine cylinders using a turbine driven by exhaust gas energy connected to a centrifugal compressor, effectively supercharging the engine to improve volumetric efficiency and power output.

Marine diesel turbochargers are driven exclusively by the thermal and kinetic energy of the exhaust gases leaving the cylinders, particularly at rated loads and revolutions per minute where exhaust gas volume peaks.
